Can Better Sleep Boost Esports Performance?

In collaboration with UCI School of Medicine
Published in Scientific Reports
Scientific Reports (Nature Portfolio, published by Springer Nature, 2025)

Competitive gaming demands focus, strategy, and stamina—and sleep is the ultimate power-up.

Partnering with UC Irvine’s School of Medicine, our researchers examined how rest affects gameplay.

Findings

Even when players didn’t actually sleep more, learning about the importance of sleep improved awareness, mental readiness, and decision-making. Sometimes, the win begins with knowledge.

“Turns out, gamers don’t sleep more—even when you ask them to.” 😅

Researching the Impacts of Esports Programs for Youth

A Connected Learning Lab project at UC Irvine

How can esports support learning, belonging, and opportunity for young players?

Researchers at UC Irvine’s Connected Learning Lab are exploring exactly that.

Their project, Researching the Impacts of Esports Programs for Youth, examines how participation in youth and school-based esports programs influences social connection, confidence, and academic engagement.

The project includes multiple studies and publications that investigate how organized gaming environments can empower students to learn teamwork, leadership, and digital citizenship—skills that prepare them for future academic and career success.
