ESPORTS LEADERSHIP BOARD

The UCI Esports Leadership Board is a diverse group of community members who want a deeper connection and relationship to the UCI Esports program. Our members generously share their knowledge, networks, and financial resources with the university in support of our mission.

Members play a unique role in the success of our program, collegiate esports, and the esports ecosystem as UCI pushes the frontier in scholastic esports.

After receiving a bachelor of arts in business administration from the University of California, Irvine in 2019, Deric returned, completing his MBA in 2023. Deric is the managing partner of an Orange County based venture firm that targets emerging and high-impact biotechnology companies. Since its release in June of 2020, Deric has been an avid Valorant player and is on a mission to collect all the ranked gun buddies between iron and radiant. Deric is excited to bring his business acumen and passion for gaming to the UCI E-Sports community. He is happy to connect with students to build a fun, collaborative, and enriching experience at the E-Sports arena.

Edgar J. Dormitorio is the Chief of Staff for the Division of Student Affairs at the University of California Irvine. In this role, he is responsible for assisting the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs in managing the division which includes the areas of the Office of the Vice Chancellor, Wellness Health & Counseling, Auxiliary Services & Business Enterprises, and Student Life & Leadership. The Division of Student Affairs is the campus’s largest division and is dedicated to supporting students’ well-being and fostering their growth. Prior to serving in his current role he was the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Conduct at the University of California, Irvine where he was responsible for managing the campus student disciplinary process. He also held interim roles as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Services. His experiences include managing high profile disciplinary cases involving a range of student behaviors from sexual assaults to working with students with mental health issues. He served as a member of the Consultation Team, UCI’s behavioral intervention team and the Care Management Team for cases involving sexual assault, stalking, and harassment. He has served in a number of student affairs positions at UCI over the past 20 years.

Jennifer Gares is a dynamic professional with over a decade of experience in many different sides of the world of esports. Her diverse expertise spans multiple facets of the industry, from managing the esports and influencer marketing strategies of HyperX and Red Bull to creator acquisition on streaming platform startups like Forge and influencer management companies like Loaded. More recently, Jennifer has leveraged her extensive background in agency and talent management honed at Loaded to significantly contribute to Team Liquid, one of the largest esports teams in the world, as its Senior Director of Talent Management since 2022. Additionally, she serves as a key member of the leadership board for esports at the University of California Irvine, embodying her commitment to shaping the future of competitive gaming both within Team Liquid and beyond.

Johnny Hou is the founder and CEO of NZXT, a design-focused hardware manufacturer of cases, components and accessories for the PC gaming market. Founded in 2004, NZXT officially launched while Johnny was studying at UC Irvine and has continued to grow as the needs of the PC gaming community has evolved. With the purpose of serving the PC gaming community, NZXT believes anyone can be a PC gamer.

Elvin is the President of the Sapphire Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports social entrepreneurship, education, and health initiatives across Southern California. Elvin began his career at UBS in Ultra High Net Private Wealth Management, where he spearheaded inflows of $100 million in net new assets. Subsequently, he worked at Apple and Amazon, where he oversaw cross-functional teams spanning multiple divisions. Pursuing his passion for entrepreneurship, Elvin has also created and invested in companies with notable exits in the food services and finance.

Elvin received his bachelor’s degree from and is currently pursuing his Executive MBA at UC Irvine. In support of the Anteater community, Elvin serves as a board member for the UCI Beall Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (BCIE), is on the Advisory Board for the Hub @ UCI, is one of the UCI ANTrepreneur Center’s Founder’s Circle members, and a member of the ANTrepreneur Center’s ACE Committee.

Susie Kim is an esports veteran, who has worked extensively both in front and behind the camera. She began her career as a host, translator, caster, and interviewer, and later, as a community and professional team manager. She spent three years with Twitch building out the company’s Korean presence, while also working as talent for OGN, a premier gaming television channel in Korea.


Upon moving back to America, Susie became the general manager of the Overwatch League’s London Spitfire and led the team to a championship in the inaugural season. She then laid the groundwork for Cloud9’s Training Grounds and joined the University of California Irvine’s Esports Leadership Board in order to pursue her passion for educating the esports stars and professionals of tomorrow.


Susie remains one of the most recognizable figures in the esports industry due to her 20 years of experience across a variety of titles and genres. She looks for opportunities to utilize her skills with logistics, education, and community outreach to propel the esports industry forward.

I’ve been working in the Games industry for over 8 years with a focus in Marketing and Brand Management. I currently work on World of Warcraft and have worked on many other franchises in the past including VALORANT and Diablo. I’m passionate about mentorship and helping students find their first step into the industry. My goal is to help bridge the gap for those trying to enter gaming, especially those from underrepresented communities.

Jeff Schaffer is the Founder and Managing Partner of Five Crowns Capital. He currently serves on the boards of Picture Head Holdings, Verrex, and Mob Scene, was previously the Chairman of the Board and CEO of American Sand & Gravel, Ltd., and has been a director on numerous other boards. Prior to founding Five Crowns Capital in 2003, Mr. Schaffer was the Managing Director of Private Equity for The United Company, a privately-held Virginia-based corporation founded in 1970. The diverse, multi-billion dollar portfolio included companies in energy, manufacturing, distribution, pharmaceuticals, real estate, financial services and golf. As an executive officer, Jeff served on the company’s Operating and Investment Committees and was President of Scratch Golf Company. Prior to joining The United Company in early 1999, Jeff was a principal at Marwit Capital, a Southern California based private investment fund with a forty-year history focusing on equity and subordinated debt investments in closely-held companies. He has also held senior positions at Price Waterhouse Coopers and the H.J. Heinz food company. Mr. Schaffer is a member of the Young Presidents Organization, and a Certified Public Accountant (inactive) in California. He earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California, and an M.B.A. with a dual major in Finance and Strategic Management from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Nick Theodorakis has a diverse work experience in the field of product management and esports consulting. Nick started their career at Samueli Academy in 2019 as an Esports Consultant, where they designed innovative esports and video game curriculum, educated students about the industry and managed the esports club. In 2019, they also interned at VIZIO as a Product Planning Intern, where they managed weekly purchase orders and maintained Amazon product pages. In 2020, they were promoted to Associate Product Planner at VIZIO, where they continued to manage purchase orders, prepare presentations on the gaming ecosystem, and work on potential gaming initiatives. Currently, they are the Product Manager at VIZIO, responsible for driving the company’s gaming initiative, advising senior executives, managing workflow with international partners, and defining product specifications through testing and analysis.

I am a current student-athlete at UCI, running track for the Anteaters in the 400 and 800 meter events. I am also a Game Design Major with a passion for video games and the unique impact they have. I grew up playing Nintendo games thanks to the influence of my parents, and since then I have developed my love for games of all kinds. I hope to one day make video games that will inspire people to make a difference in the world.

I am a lifelong technologist who grew up playing first generation Nintendo games. My junior year of college I was able to intern for a technology company where I would begin my journey of selling IT data center solutions and I have never looked back. Currently I work for Juniper Networks where I specialize in providing high-speed networks, security and wireless solutions to the largest companies in Southern California. I enjoy playing with some of my old school favorites such as Street fighter 2 and Super Mario brothers.
