UCI Esports is always looking out for new talent to join our scholarship teams for League of Legends and Overwatch (PC)! If you are interested, here’s some basic information to help make this process easier.

Starting in Fall 2019, we are offering scholarships for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as well. However, please note that this is currently a 1-year trial as we figure out how to best operate.

  • Must be a current or incoming full-time student at UCI
  • Must be at least high Diamond (League of Legends) or Grandmaster (Overwatch)
    • Most of our players are at least Masters (League of Legends) and 4000 SR (Overwatch)

Application Process (PC)

  • Fill out our Recruitment Interest form if you are an incoming or prospective student to help us track your UC application/status
  • Eligible applicants will be invited to try out as we prepare rosters for the new year
    • Please note that we may not respond to every applicant
    • If you have any questions, feel free to email us!
  • Priority applicants will have a chance to visit the campus and facility, meet current team members, coaches, and program staff
  • Priority applicants may receive a pre-tryout for coaches to understand their play style, communication skills, and game sense
  • Tryout applications will be released on our website and social media for current students and eligible incoming students
  • Live tryouts will be held during or shortly before the school year, depending on the season’s schedule
  • A final roster will be finalized before the season begins

Application Process (Smash)

  • We are working closely with our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate club and local experts throughout the tryout process
  • The top 16 eligible players will be selected through various evaluations and tournament results including:
    • Results from the first 4 UCI tournaments in October
    • Results from SoCal locals, including reputable wins and placements
    • Results and positions from previous years at UCI
  • We will be considering win/loss records against specific players, using an Elo rating system to reward upsets and ensure no expected losses are unduly punished
  • After the first 4 UCI tournaments, the top candidates will be invited to a final Round Robin event near the end of the month
    • The time and date of the event is TBD
  • All finalists will also be interviewed by the UCI Esports Smash Ultimate Advisory Board to gauge fit for the scholarship team
  • For more details or to reach club officers assisting with tryouts, please join the club’s Facebook group and refer to this post
