As we look forward to year two for the program, we are making a couple semantic changes to the program. Neither of these changes will affect the operations of the program but they reflect the direction of our program after a year of experimentation and exploration.
First of all, we will be rebranding from UCI eSports to UCI Esports, with a lowercase S and a capital E. We have watched the discussion around the spelling of the word and believe that for esports to really become mainstream and a regular part of our lexicon, we should treat the word normally. While this change has been hotly debated, we think this is an industry trend that will continue into the future. We will start updating our word marks and graphics over the summer to be fully ready by the fall.
Secondly, we are adding “Research” to our “Academics” pillar to more accurately reflect what our program focuses on. As we participate and fund more research, it will become a more integral part of what we do. Moving forward, our four pillars will be: Competition, Academics & Research, Community and Entertainment.
Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you in game!
